Prep Time: ~5 minutes | Cook Time: ~25 minutes | Total Time: Approx. 30 minutes
Ingredients:
1 lb. ground beef
½ small yellow onion, diced
1 15 oz. can tomato sauce
½ c. ketchup
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 Tbsp. white vinegar
1 tsp. dark brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
½ tsp. garlic powder
½ tsp. black pepper
1 tsp. vegetable oil
Olive oil spray (optional)
Directions:
Spray skillet with non-stick cooking spray (optional) and heat skillet to medium temperature. Add ground beef and lower temperature to medium-low heat, breaking beef up into very small chunks. Brown until most of the pink color is gone from the beef, about 4-5 minutes.
Remove from heat and transfer ground beef aside in a paper towel-lined bowl (this will remove excess fat from the beef).
In 1 tsp. oil, sweat onions on medium-low heat, stirring gently, until the onions are translucent, about 5 minutes.
Add rest of the ingredients (except the beef), and stir well. Bring to medium-high. Once simmering, bring skillet to low heat and cook for 5 minutes.
At low heat, add beef, and stir well to combine. Put lid on skillet and let cook for 5-6 minutes.
Notes:
I use 85 / 15 ground beef and cook in a non-stick pan so I don’t normally need any oil or spray. Use whatever works best for you, whether it’s using meat with a lower fat content or using a pan that isn’t non-stick. (such as a cast iron skillet).
Ground turkey is a good substitution for ground beef if you are interested in lowering your red meat intake.
Vegetarian or vegan? Try Beyond Meat or another meat alternative substitute. If you are going the vegetarian route, be sure to substitute Worcestershire sauce for a vegetarian / vegan alternative.
